After German goldsmith Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg published the Gutenberg Bibles in 1455 (the oldest surviving example of printing with movable metal type in Europe), the skill spread quickly from Germany to Italy. It was a former pupil of Gutenberg’s, Johann Neumeister, who worked one of Italy’s first printing presses in Foligno in April 1472, publishing the first edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy to great acclaim. The Celebrazione Dantesca celebrates this illustrious past with a month-long calendar of events, which includes a reading of some of the canti in the Divine Comedy.
